October 20, 2012 04:24 pm | Updated 04:24 pm IST - Chennai

Bumble Bee Child Development Centre (BBCDC), Saidapet, and Priyaa Speech and Hearing Centre, Madipakkam, are jointly working on parental perception of social needs of special children for launching a new initiative called Bumblebee Social Support Initiative.

Recently, BBCDC also conducted a training session for 100 teachers of Pon Vidyasram Group of Schools on “Empowering teachers- emotionally competent teaching” to address their concerns while dealing with an occasional problematic child. Jeeja Ajith, speech pathologist said, “So far the results have been encouraging. We take about 15-20 days for stammering correction, 10-15 days for loss of voice in partial vocal cord paralysis.”

In spite of laws for inclusive education, parents of children with special needs are finding it tough to get admission in normal schools. This necessitates a greater awareness among those working in the educational sector to implement the proposals on ground.

BBCDC invites active participation of parents of children with special needs to continue championing for the cause of social support for special needs. Home visits and screening questionnaire validated by Prof. M.K.C Nair of Child Development Centre, Medical College, Trivandrum, is being used for this. Screening of home environment is also equally important as many risk factors need to be modified for effective and holistic development.

Based on American Academy of Paediatrics recommendation of four hour per day programme, BBCDC has started a programme covering most of the areas in a structured way. BBCDC offers to help any school in Chennai with free assessments for identification of children with developmental/ learning problems. Separate remedial help shall be offered to those children, with the active involvement of the schools and parents.

The centre is located at No. 32, Karneeswarar Koil Street, Saidapet. For details, call 2381 1113 / 72999 38038.
