A fire accident can be a very traumatic experience for the victims, especially children. ‘Total management of the burned child', a book that seeks to address the issue of coping with and caring for paediatric burns, was launched here on Wednesday.
Speaking at the launch function organised by The CHILDS Trust Medical Research Foundation, T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, commended the efforts of K.Mathangi Ramakrishnan, chairperson of the Foundation, in bringing out the book that has contributions from doctors in different parts of the country.
Enriching experience
Commending Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan for her dedication to the field for several years, Dr. Ramasami, who was earlier director of the Central Leather Research Institute, said collaborating with her on research projects then was an enriching experience.
M.S.Ananth, director, Indian Institute of Technology – Madras, emphasised the need to facilitate more inter-disciplinary research in India. “I have been urging that medicine and engineering be brought together on the same campuses. Unlike minds should come together for innovative research,” he said.
Minister for Electricity Arcot N. Veeraswami said Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan played a key role in developing the burns unit set up at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi about three decades ago. The book would be a great resource for paediatricians, the Minister said.
Dr. Mathangi Ramakrishnan said that children were innocent victims of fire accidents and had to be looked after in a very special way. “Not many came forward to publish this work, as it is on a very specialised topic, but Hyderabad-based Paras Publishing agreed,” she said, thanking them, the authors and editors for their support.
