BJP condemns attack

The BJP on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on priests carried out by workers of the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK) and urged the State government to take stern action to put an end to such incidents.

In a statement, BJP leader, Subramanian Swamy, said there were reports that miscreants entered houses of several Brahmin priests and attacked them violently. Their sacred threads were also cut.

“These wanton attacks are because of the incompetent administration in Tami Nadu, which is today unable to maintain law and order or act in any way which is required of them under the Constitution,” he alleged.

Reacting to the development, BJP Tamil Nadu president, Tamilisai Soundararajan, said the attacks were cowardly. One of the victims, Vishwanatha Gurukkal of Mylapore, was the father of a BJP functionary.

“No one can accept the DVK imposing its views on others. In order to ensure they do not continue such divisive activities, all political parties should condemn these attacks,” she said. The State should ensure protection for the people against such attacks and stern punishment should be awarded to the perpetrators of such violence, she said.
