A 21-year-old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the roof of a two-storey building in Villivakkam on Wednesday night.

The deceased, D. Sivakumar, was a final-year student of computer science at RMK Engineering College in Tiruvallur. He lived with friends in a rented house on the second floor of a two-storey building on Perumal Koil South Mada Street in Villivakkam.

Around 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sivakumar went to the terrace and reportedly jumped off. He suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the Kilpauk government hospital. He was later taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he breathed his last, the Villivakkam police said.

“He was depressed over not getting placed during the campus interviews held recently. He was also suspected to have been in a relationship which ended, not too long ago,” said an investigating officer.

Villivakkam police have registered a case of unnatural death and further investigations are on.
