Battery-operated MTC buses in Chennai, Wi-Fi facility in airconditioned buses of transport corporations, more air-conditioned sleeper buses, CCTVs in buses and cashless transactions are some of the announcements made by Transport Minister M.R.Vijayabhaskar in the Assembly on Saturday.

Replying to queries from MLAs during the discussion on demand for grants of the Transport department, Mr. Vijayabhaskar said battery-run buses would soon be seen in Chennai.

A senior MTC official said taking into consideration the cost of the green bus, pegged at around ₹1.20 crore to ₹1.50 crore, the government was considering seeking a loan from the Centre. “Wi-Fi facility will be provided in all air-conditioned buses of State Transport Corporations,” said Mr. Vijayabhaskar.

He also said cashless transactions would be implemented in all transport corporations.

CCTV units would be installed in buses in a phased manner.

Air-conditioned sleeper buses would be inducted into the fleet of State Express Transport Corporation. Following good response to toilet-attached buses, more buses would be provided with the facility.
