Bad road, stagnant water claim 3 lives in Royapuram

A woman and her two daughters were killed in a road accident at Royapuram here on Wednesday night. Bad road conditions coupled with rainwater stagnation led to the gruesome accident, a police official said.

According to police sources, T. Jeeva alias Jeevarathinam (26) of Royapuram went to a private hospital after his three-month old infant baby fell ill. While returning home on his motorcycle, Jeeva entered the West Madha Church Road where the road was slippery and potholes were filled with rainwater.

While crossing a pothole, Jeeva's wife, Saritha (22), daughter Deepika (3) and the infant baby lost balance and fell on the road. While Saritha and Deepika came under the wheels of a trailer lorry which was passing that way and died on the spot, the infant baby suffered grievous injuries and died hours later in a private hospital.

“Jeeva thought he was entering a plain surface…it was actually a pothole filled with rainwater. The trailer lorry which came out of the port was carrying rolls of steel sheets to a car manufacturing company. We have arrested the lorry driver Balaji (26) of Vandavasi,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-North) S. Manoharan said. Local people resorted to a road roko agitation on S.N. Chetty Road condemning the incident and demanded that a ban be imposed on the movement of trailer/container lorries in the area. Police used mild force to chase them away, the sources added.
