As diarrhoea rages, public anger boils over

A group of residents, along with activists of a few organisations, staged a demonstration on the premises of Ripon Buildings on Friday demanding adequate measures to cope with diarrhoeal diseases in the city.

The protestors dispersed after Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy assured them of immediate action. The group of protestors gave a list of affected localities where civic conditions need to be improved by the Chennai Corporation. The areas mentioned in the list included Pullapuram, Boopathy Nagar, Ossankulam, Chetpet, Tiruvottiyur, Pulianthope and Desiya Nagar in R.K.Nagar. They also stressed the need for immediate intervention by authorities for preventing mixing of sewage with drinking water in many localities.

Former Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday warned of mass agitation against the Chennai Corporation if the officials fail to deal with the challenges to public health. Mr. Stalin, accompanied by former Mayor M. Subramanian, visited various localities in Kolathur constituency on Friday and assessed the conditions.

He visited localities such as Chengalvarayan Street, Vanchinathan Street, Mariya Naickan Street, Jamalia, Shanthi Nagar, Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar, Kumaran Nagar and Perundeviamman Avenue. Residents of the areas stressed the need for improvement in the conditions. Mr. Stalin blamed the government of not taking action towards preventing mixing of sewage with drinking water.

“More than 10 localities in my constituency were found to face such problem. Residents showed samples of the contaminated water to me. ,” said Mr. Stalin.

Mayor Saidai. S. Duraisamy and Health Department officials of the Chennai Corporation visited the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet and assessed the conditions.
