In an exercise that is likely to enhance the value of the Metro corridor, the Greater Chennai Corporation is executing a station area development project in areas near the eight elevated Metro Rail stations, which are under operation, except for St. Thomas Mount.

A Corporation official said around 317 roads were identified for the street improvement plan, of which 288 interior street roads have been completed. Of the remaining 29, work is under progress in 13 roads; work on 12 roads is to be taken up; and the tender process is under way for four roads. The plan covers four zones – Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Alandur and Adyar.

The project involves improving civic infrastructure covering road, footpath and street lighting. The plan is based on the recommendations of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Several interior roads in the four zones, including Ashok Nagar Main Road, MMDA Main Road, street roads in Annai Sathya Nagar, Butt Link Road, Sripuram Colony, MKN Road, Railway Station Road, Medavakkam Main Road, Karuneegar Street, Sivan Koil Streets, Amman Koil Street in Saligramam, Bhaktavatchalam Main Road and K.K. Nagar Main Road.

A senior official of CMRL said their focus was on improving street lighting.

The civic body has decided to fix street lights on either side of every pillar facing the road at a height of eight metres. Already, light fixtures have been installed on the pillars of CMRL near SAF Games Village. The civic body has also requested the CMRL to provide funds for the streetlighting work, which has been accepted, the Corporation official added.
