Appoint VCs for six universities: CPI(M)

February 08, 2012 09:40 am | Updated 09:40 am IST - CHENNAI:

The State unit of the CPI(M) on Tuesday urged the government to appoint Vice-Chancellors for six universities in the State, pointing out that the vacancies had caused enormous hardship to students as they could not get their certificates even though the convocations were over long ago.

A resolution adopted in the State committee meeting of the party said the posts of Vice-Chancellor for Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and Madurai Kamaraj University had been lying vacant for the last eight months.

“The certificates cannot be distributed because there are no Vice-Chancellors to sign them,” said CPI(M) State secretary G. Ramakrishnan in a statement.

Similarly Thanjavur Tamil University, Vellore Tiruvalluvar University, Kodaikanal Annai Therasa University and Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University also did not have Vice-Chancellors, he said.

“Syndicates of these universities are not able to take any decision on administration and education. Students are the worst hit in this situation as they are not able to apply for jobs as they cannot get their certification,” Mr. Ramakrishnan said.

Another resolution wanted the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission and the Madras High Court to bring in suitable changes to age limit for appointment of civil judges. The party said fixing the upper age limit as 40 for practising advocates falling under the reserved categories would severely affect lawyers who were keen on applying for the posts.
