The Andhra Pradesh police have denied that Raja, a 24-year-old chain snatching suspect from Red Hills, died in police custody.
According to the A.P. police, Baskar and his wife Anuradha of Tirupati were travelling on a motorcycle to attend a marriage reception at a village near Satyavedu.
While they were near Pudukuppam, adjacent to Utthukottai, a gang on a motorbike waylaid them and robbed a 10-sovereign gold chain from Anuradha. The gang also struck Jayashree, a teacher, who was on her moped and robbed her of a six-sovereign gold chain near N.M. Kandigai.
Meanwhile, the couple reported the incident to their relatives in the wedding hall and the public caught six persons and thrashed them before handing them over to the Satyavedu police.
Succumbed to injuries
B. Sribavani Harsha, DSP, Puttur division, said, “A few hours later, they brought Raja to the police station. When he was brought to the station, his condition was very bad. The police personnel rushed him to the Government Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.”
The body of Raja was then handed over to his parents.
The others were remanded in judicial custody, the police said.
