After NSC Bose Road, it is the turn of T. Nagar to come under surveillance aimed at preventing theft.

The initiative by the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants Association involves setting up cameras on Usman Road.

The association, which is celebrating is platinum jubilee, recently installed nearly 45 cameras on a 2 km-stretch on NSC Bose Road, a hub of gold, diamond and silver ornaments manufacturing and sales. The devices have been installed at junctions of various bylanes, including Narayana Mudali Street and Kasi Chetty lane.

The surveillance system on NSC Bose Road is being implemented on a trial basis for now and will be fully functional in a fortnight.

The focus is on congested areas with narrow lanes as the likelihood of thefts happening there is more. There are nearly 600 wholesale and retail jewellery shops in the area.

MJDMA’s president Jayanthilal Challani said that the move would curb crime in the area and ensure the safety of valuables. The association is also working with the police to monitor NSC Bose Road.

“We are also providing locker facility on NSC Bose road to the jewellers belonging to our association,” he said.

The association also plans to conduct a jewellery exhibition in October at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam. So far, the annual fair was open only for business visitors. This year, customers can purchase ornaments.
