The curtains came down on the eighth edition of Chennai International Film Festival on Thursday with a function to honour Tamil film makers for their contribution to the industry.
‘Angadi Theru' was adjudged the best film. Director Vasanthabalan and executive producer Vijayakumar were presented the award and a cheque of Rs.1 lakh each by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, D. Napoleon. Mr. Vasanthabalan said the film festival served as a platform to promote Tamil films in international arena.
‘Kalavaani' was chosen as the second best film for which its director Sargunam and producer Nazir were presented the award and a cash award of Rs.75,000 each.
While director Prabhu Solomon was adjudged as the best director for ‘Myna', director and actor R.Parthiban won the jury award for ‘Aayirathil Oruvan.'
Mr.Solomon thanked team members and audience for supporting good films. Mr.Parthiban said he was receiving the award on behalf of those film makers who are yet to be recognised for their achievements and budding talents in the industry.
‘Orr Iravu', directed by Hari Shankar, Harish Narayan and Krishnashekar, got a special award. Varun Kumar, a resident of Velachery, received the film buff award for viewing maximum number of movies at the festival.
Director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and actors Charuhasan and Archana were the jury members.
Mr.Napolean said that the film festival provided an opportunity to view movies from different countries and would be a new and learning experience for the film fraternity here.
The festival was organised by Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation with the support of the Film Federation of India and South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce. A total of 125 films from 40 countries and 12 Tamil films were screened at the nine-day festival. A total of 1,900 persons viewed the movies as against 1,200 last year.
Film directors Aparna Sen, Balu Mahendra, K.Bhagyaraj and ICAF president B.Ramakrishnan, CIFF's vice chairman S.Ve.Shekher and CIFF's festival director E.Thangaraj participated.
