The ‘T’ (triangular) junction in Mangadu witnesses heavy traffic movement as it is located on the Mangadu-Kundrathur Main Road which is preferred by many motorists heading towards Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. There are also motorists who hit this road to avoid the more congested Porur-Kundrathur Main Road.
This road also provides easy access to the Bengaluru Highway (NH04).
Buses originating at the Metropolitan Transport Corporation terminuses in Poonamallee, Kundrathur and Iyyapanthangal pass through this junction. Besides all of these factors, droves of motorists descend on this junction during weekends and festive seasons, as a few temples are located in the area. It is bewildering that scant attention is being paid to such an important junction.
There are lamps but they don’t emit sufficient light. There are speed breakers, but they lack markings. There is no CCTV surveillance of the junction.
Worse, there is no traffic signal at the intersection; nor does it have traffic police personnel watching over it.
And, you will find waking on this chaotic road, as they have been elbowed off the pavements by shopkeepers and hawkers who have encroached upon that space.
“It is difficult to cross this section, as vehicular movement is almost continuous,” says K. Vedachallam, a senior citizen and a resident of Mangadu. According to police sources, on an average, two accidents, including fatal ones, are reported from the junction every month.
“A traffic signal will be installed at the earliest and steps will also be taken to remove encroachments around the junction,” says a State Highways official.
