: Responding to an urgent mention made by an advocate who alleged that the boycott of the court by a section of the legal fraternity is causing severe hardship to other others who wanted to work, the First Bench of the Madras High Court advised the agitating lawyers to approach the Supreme Court to get their grievance addressed.

“If the advocates are so concerned about the amendments made to the Statutory Rules of the High Court empowering judges to debar erring lawyers, why don’t you (advocates) challenge them before the Supreme Court,” the First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan asked.

Earlier, minutes after the First Bench commenced proceedings, Mr. Krishnamurthy said: “We are threatened not to attend the court proceedings, we could not even walk freely wearing the robes.”

He also sought extension of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) protection to the entire high court premises.

Responding to his plea, the Bench said, “Extension of CISF protection is already under consideration. But the money involved in the major factor.”

He further added, “I am anguished by the behaviour of some lawyers who tell me something when they meet me in my chamber but go out and act differently.”

The court said extending CISF protection to the entire HC premises was under consideration
