The floods in Chennai in December last year were totally man-made and due to the incompetence of the AIADMK government, senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram alleged on Friday.

Campaigning for the party’s Mylapore candidate Karate R.Thiagarajan on Friday evening, Mr. Chidambaram said, “Even during the floods, Ms. Jayalalithaa’s feet didn’t touch the ground.”

Mr. Chidambaram questioned the AIADMK leader on the manifesto announced on Thursday claiming that it was a copy of the DMK’s manifesto. “Also, why should a ruling party present a manifesto with all these promises? An opposition party needs a chance to tell people what they plan to do. The AIADMK government was in power for five years. Why did they not make these announcements in the budget,” he asked.

Support for prohibition

He said the Congress was fully in support of prohibition and would back the DMK to fulfil the promise of total prohibition in Tamil Nadu. “Ms.Jayalalithaa, through her minister, Natham Viswanathan, only a couple of months ago said prohibition will create a loss. Now, she has changed her stance,” he said. He said Tamil Nadu was behind other States on many parameters. The State had only a few private ports, no AIIMS, no IIM, the number of educated unemployed youth was huge, there were no jobs in Tamil Nadu, he said.

‘Jobs not filled’

He said the Jayalalithaa regime had not filled more than 3.5 lakh government jobs and teachers’ vacancies in the past five years. “The DMK has promised that they will fill these vacancies,” he said.

Hitting out at Ms. Jayalalithaa, he told voters “her attitude has not changed in her three terms as Chief Minister. Do not make the mistake of voting for her party for a fourth time”.
