AIADMK to stage protest in Erode

July 29, 2010 01:59 am | Updated 01:59 am IST - CHENNAI:

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) will stage a demonstration at Perundurai in Erode district on August 2 against the setting up of hazardous waste disposal facility. In a statement, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said that the new facility could affect the livelihood of over 1 lakh people. Already, the effluent discharge from Perundurai SIPCOT had affected farmlands and drinking water sources in the vicinity. The proposal to store solid waste generated from 575 industries in eight western districts in the new facility spreading over 50 acres would damage thousands of acres of farmlands in Perundurai and Chennimalai blocks, she said.

The AIADMK would hold a demonstration led by headquarters secretary K.A. Sengottaiyan in front of taluk office in Perundurai on August 2, Jayalalithaa said.
