Adyar River to get a makeover

Riverfront development, cycle tracks, walkways to come up

The Adyar River is set to get a makeover with riverfront development, plantation of native species, plugging of sewage outfalls, modular sewage treatment plants, walkways and cycle tracks estimated at ₹ 1,666 crore.

The State is expected to give administrative sanction for some of the 78 sub projects of the ecorestoration project. “It is an ecological restoration of the river. The restoration of the Adyar creek covering 358 acres has been successful. The detailed project report for the restoration of the river from the origin to Thiru-Vi-Ka Bridge has been readied,” said an official. Officials of various line agencies participated in a meeting on Monday. Chennai Corporation will implement 18 proposals, including development of walkways, cycle tracks, removing solid waste and construction debris, plantation of native species and development of parks.

Encroachments will be removed at 27 locations.
