A danger spot for motorists

Lack of sufficient illumination, speed-breakers and reflectors increases risk of accidents at Adyar junction

The junction connecting Nehru Nagar, Venketarathinam Nagar and Kasturibai Nagar in Adyar is turning into an accident-prone zone. On an average, two accidents take place every fortnight. The reasons: Poor illumination and narrowness of the intersection. Police sources say motorists are unable to spot approaching vehicles.

Many motorists use this intersection to avoid the stretch near the Adyar bus terminus and the traffic-congested Sardar Patel Road, to reach Thiruvanmiyur junction via LB Road.

“A number of residents use the junction to go to adjoining areas such as Indira Nagar, Kasturibai Nagar and Taramani. However, due to poor illumination and lack of safety features, the junction has become accident-prone,” says R. Sivakumar, a resident of Adyar. There are no signboards reflectors and speed breakers at the junction.

Further, huge trees on roads connecting to the junction block the light from sodium vapour lamps. Residents say Corporation has not pruned the trees for years.

“As there isn’t much space at the junction, we are unable to construct a traffic island there. However, trees around the junction will be puned at the earliest,” says a Corporation official.
