May 17 Movement leader Thirumurugangandhi and other functionaries of Tamil Vidiyal Katchi co-ordinators — Daison, Illamaran, and its youth wing Arunkumar — who were detained under the Goondas Act appeared before the Advisory Board on Thursday seeking to release them forthwith.

They were arrested following a protest on Marina Beach in the memory of Tamils who lost their lives in the war between Sri Lankan forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Four persons, who are serving the detention order under the Goondas Act, were given an opportunity to present their version before the Board regarding their detention under the Goondas Act. On behalf of them, Dravidar Vidudhalai Kazhagam leader Kolathur Mani, professor Sivakumar and Sa. Gandhi presented their arguments before the Board. They stated the detenues were innocent and were detained without any grounds. Moreover, there were no witnesses to the alleged offences committed by them.
