Acid attack on I-T dept. employee

August 25, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:22 am IST - CHENNAI:

Two unidentified men threw acid on a 23-year-old employee of the Income Tax department in Anna Nagar on Tuesday night. The victim, Mohit, a native of Madhya Pradesh, was living in an apartment in the Central Revenue Quarters, Anna Nagar with his two colleagues.

According to the police, Mohit was alone in his house as his roommates had gone for dinner. Around 9 p.m., someone knocked on his door and the moment he opened it, the assailants threw acid on his face and fled.

“The men were wearing helmets and they left on their motorcycle after the attack,” said an investigating officer. On hearing him scream, the neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital. Mohit suffered 40 percent burns on his face, back and abdomen.

Officers said that Mohit is a hockey player and had landed the job in the IT Department on sports quota.

“We are not clear about the motive yet,” said an officer from the Thirumangalam police. They were not able to recover CCTV footage from the premise, as the cameras have been dysfunctional for 20 days. “The attackers however dropped a parcel box at his doorstep which contained acid. The addresses of the sender and recipient of the box had been struck off. The cover was from a chemical firm in Goa. We are contacting the company and looking for further clues to trace the attackers and the motive,” the officer said.
