The digital media should not be confined to the entertainment industry alone, rather the students should also consider developing learning tools using animation modalities, said Poongothai Aladi Aruna, Minister for Information Technology here on Tuesday.

Delivering the convocation address of the IMAGE College of Arts, Animation and Technology (ICAT), she said that it is important to develop innovative contents in the school curriculum for difficult subjects and for students with learning difficulties.

“The government would also consider the option of introducing M. Phil and Ph.D courses in the animation field to develop expert faculties,” she added. “It is important to conserve and protect our heritage, language and culture.

We can showcase our talents and culture to the world by using Tamil and other local languages as the medium of communication rather than English which is commonly used. There is a huge market for such colourful works within in India.” She also stressed the importance of developing the spirit of entrepreneurship among students. “We can develop our own industrial hub on a par with industries worldwide rather than outsource our talents,” she added.

The chief guest Rajiv Vaishnav, Vice-president, NASSCOM highlighted the importance of passion and expression in the design industry. The project works of students of ICAT were displayed. More than 80 students from the animation, visual effects and gaming departments were presented degrees.
