A girl child who was found abandoned at the Tambaram bus terminus on Wednesday morning was rescued and handed over to a welfare centre.

Police said that staff membres of Tambaram Municipality who were engaged in clearing garbage at the bus terminus noticed the child alone and abandoned. They waited for some time and as nobody came in search of the child, they contacted the Tambaram police station. Meanwhile, volunteers from Good Life Centre in West Tambaram came to the spot and took the girl child to their shelter on Loganathan Street after completing formalities at the police station.

K.Bhaskar, honorary secretary of Good Life Centre, said the child was around 18 months old. They suspect the child to be suffering from speech and hearing impairment. However, it could be established only after a thorough medical check-up for which they were taking the child to Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children in Egmore. Tambaram police said that so far, no one had come to give a child missing complaint.
