‘A victory for democracy’

As soon as the television channels flashed the news of the Supreme Court verdict, DMDK cadre at the party headquarters in Koyambedu began bursting crackers and distributing sweets to the public.

Whip of the DMDK Legislative party, V.C. Chandrakumar, who was one of the six suspended MLAs, said the verdict was a clear victory for justice. “This has strengthened our faith in the judiciary.”

In Salem, the DMDK cadre raised slogans hailing the verdict and also the party founder Vijayakant.

When contacted, Alagapuram R. Mohanraj (Salem North) another suspended MLA, said it was a victory for democracy and party leader Vijayakant, who fought relentlessly against the suspension. S. R. Parthiban (Mettur), another suspended MLA, said the verdict would strengthen the hands of party founder Mr. Vijayakant who was fighting hard to uphold democratic principles.

“This is a victory for people,” said DMDK MLA from Sulur K. Thinakaran.
