A temporary setback, says Thol. Thirumavalavan

May 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan on Thursday played down the rout of the third front in the recently concluded Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu saying it was only a temporary setback for the six-party DMDK-PWF alliance.

“We will continue to ally with like-minded parties and will not stop until we achieve our objective of forming a coalition government in the State,” Mr Thirumavalavan told journalists here.

According to him, the AIADMK and DMK had no reason to feel good about their performance in the elections. He claimed that even in VIP constituencies the candidates of the two Dravidian parties could win only by distributing money to voters.

He alleged that the DMK and AIADMK put the voters in a spot by distributing money. “Despite being faced with such illegal and unethical acts, I am happy that the third front has garnered a significant number of votes,” he said.

However, he congratulated Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for retaining power and welcomed her decision to shut down 500 Tasmac shops and reduce the working hours. “The government must ensure that all shops are shutdown before five years. We also urge the government to restrict the working hours of liquor outlets to 5 p.m.,” he said.
