Several passengers who were injured in the train accident that occurred near Arakkonam on Tuesday night were moved to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) here early on Wednesday morning.
Orders were issued to shift some of the injured from the government hospital in Arakkonam as it did not have adequate facilities, said V.Palani, Medical Superintendent, RGGGH. “Of the injured, nine passengers suffer from multiple fractures while the rest are doing well,” said Dr.Palani. One person, Venda, was sent to the Intensive Surgical Care Unit for a pelvic bone fracture, and Rajkumar, the EMU driver, is undergoing plastic surgery procedures for his face and head injuries and is out of danger, said a doctor at the hospital.
Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi and Minister of State for Railways K.H.Muniyappa visited the injured at the hospital. “I met and talked to many of the injured. Most of them are out of danger and have minor injuries,” said Mr.Trivedi. He said investigations are being carried out to ascertain why the driver of the EMU train did not stop despite the signals.
The Minister announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of those killed, Rs.1 lakh for the seriously injured and Rs. 25,000 for those with minor injuries.
