February 05, 2017 01:16 am | Updated 01:16 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK working President M.K. Stalin expressed concern over the impact of the oil spill on the desalination plants in Minjur and Nemmeli. He urged the State government to form an expert panel to the study the impact and take immediate action.

“Instead of playing the blame game and claiming it’s the Centre’s responsibility, the State government should coordinate with the Centre and the resolve the issue, which has impacted fishermen and the environment,” he said, speaking to reporters after visiting Ennore and nearby areas. Mr. Stalin also said the State government should ensure that it gets compensation from the two shipping companies through a legal process. He said the compensation should be provided based on the provisions of the Environment Protection Act.

“Until the compensation comes, the Centre and State governments should provide interim assistance” he said.
