After five days of protests seeking removal of ban on jallikattu went off peacefully, a section of protesters called-off their demonstration as Tamil Nadu government took the ordinance route to make sure the bull-taming event is conducted.

However, some protesters stayed put demanding a "permanent solution" —  enactment of a law. On Monday morning, Tamil Nadu police launched a crackdown to evict protesters from Marina Beach and elsewhere in the State.

As a result the vehicular traffic has come to a standstill in various parts of the city.
