Two persons were arrested with ₹90 lakh in demonetised currency notes at the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) on Sunday.

Based on a tip-off that a person with old currency notes was trying to board a bus, a CMBT police team led by Inspector Saravanan inspected the omni-bus stand and found the duo, who were about to travel in a private bus from Chennai to Coimbatore. They were carrying two bags. The team, on checking the bags, found the notes packed inside.

The two arrested persons have been identified as S. Subiar (30) of South Ukkadam and A. Mohammed Rishath (30) from Pothanur in Coimbatore. Initial enquiries with the duo revealed that they had come to the city to exchange the notes.

The CMBT police arrested the two persons under various sections of the Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code and Specified Bank Notes Act (Cessation of Liabilities) Act, 2017.

Questioning of suspects

A senior officer of the city police said the duo would be interrogated by the Income Tax and Enforcement Directorate departments of the Central Government.
