More awareness on consumer rights, additional district consumer disputes redressal fora, vacant land allotment by the district collectorate for development of infrastructure are set to improve implementation of the Consumer Protection Act, said Justice S. Tamilvanan, president of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
Addressing mediapersons on Thursday, Justice Tamilvanan said many people were unaware of their rights as a consumer and that they were often hesitant to pursue legal remedies. “We have started promoting consumer clubs in colleges. Students have to play a key role in creating awareness,” he added.
‘Need more land’
Stressing on the need for more land allotment by district collectors for buildings for consumer disputes redressal, Justice Tamilvanan said development of infrastructure would have an impact on the implementation of the Consumer Protection Act. “Just nine courts have their own buildings,” he said and sought to create awareness among citizens of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
As many as 87.89 percent of the cases in the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission have been disposed, he said. A total of 8,960 cases are pending.
The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has sent a proposal to create more district fora in cities such as Chennai as the Chennai South District has more than 2,230 pending cases.
