A 26-year-old woman was found murdered inside her one-room house in Ilango Nagar, Padi on Friday night. The body was discovered by the woman's husband. Their two-year-old son was asleep next to his deceased mother, the man told police.

Korattur police sources said Maheswari, her husband Thangapandi (31) and their son Madan lived in a rented house in Ilango Nagar 1st Street. Thangapandi, who is an air-conditioner technician working with Madras University, married Maheswari four years ago. Around 9.30 p.m., Thangapandi alerted the city police that he had found his wife dead and that her nine-sovereign gold chain was missing.

A police team from Korattur reached the house and sent the woman’s body for post-mortem to the Government Kilpauk hospital. The report indicated death by strangulation. “The building in which the couple lives has many residents and the chances that an outsider gained access and slipped out are slim. We are questioning the residents,” said a senior officer attached to the investigating team. Thangapandi later retracted his statement on the jewellery going missing from his wife’s body, police said.
