Two city college students who allegedly smuggled ganja from Usilampatti in Madurai district and sold it in Chennai were arrested on Kamaraj Salai on Tuesday night.
Eight kilograms of the contraband in their possession were seized.
Anna Square police said the suspects were K. Aravind (21) of Thiruvanmiyur who is a second-year B. Tech student and R. Siddharth (19) of Kelambakkam, a B.Com student. The youths, who police believe are drug users, met through common friends two years ago.
For personal use, the duo often bought ganja from local peddlers who sold them contraband smuggled from Usilampatti, police said.
“Aravind and Siddharth then decided to do it as a business. They contacted an unidentified ganja seller in Usilampatti. A few months ago, they made their first trip to Madurai and smuggled 1 kg of ganja to sell within their friends’ circle,” said V. Karna, inspector (L&O), Anna Square.
On Tuesday night, the two returned to Broadway from their third trip to Usilampatti with 8 kg of ganja in a bag. They then took an autorickshaw to Siddharth’s hostel in Mylapore but their vehicle was intercepted by a police team as part of a routine vehicle check, the officer added.
They were remanded to custody and sent to prison on Wednesday.
