The Cheyyar Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) has rescued 17 bonded labourers from an agricultural farm near Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district on Monday.

The RDO took action based on a complaint lodged by members of the Thiruvanamalai Released Bonded Labourers Association. Seventeen labourers, including six children, were rescued from the farm. They had taken a loan from the farm owner and had been working there for the last 30 years to pay off their debt.

The RDO took steps to issue Release Certificates to 10 of the rescued labourers, which are needed to avail benefits from rehabilitation schemes. Arrangements have been made to send them to their native town in Kancheepuram district.
