A 16-year-old girl who was driving a two-wheeler was killed after she was thrown off the vehicle on Thursday evening.
The girl, M. Monica, was returning from a beauty parlour along with a friend, Shafina (12) around 7.30 p.m. when the accident occurred on an unlit stretch between her house in Nolumbur and Thirumangalam.
According to police, Monica, a class XI student of a private school in Anna Nagar, was not wearing a helmet and did not possess a driving licence.
Her father, Manoharan works in the Tamil Nadu State Cooperative bank in the area.
Thirumangalam police have registered a case under sections 274 and 304 (A) of IPC, stating rash driving as the cause of accident and subsequent death.
Residents in the area, however, were not willing to buy the argument. According to them there are no street lights in the area and there are several speed breakers.
“None of them are clearly marked making it difficult for a driver to identify them,” said S. Praveena, a resident of Korattur, who uses the stretch regularly. “The accident occurred on the road that connects Chinmaya School to Kadiravan Colony. There are five speed breakers and at one place there are two, one after the other, with no marking to identify them,” she added.
A resident of the locality who knew the girl said she taught dance to younger students as part of a Christmas carnival held last month. A friend of the family described Monica as a lovely girl who would be missed.
“It was twilight time and there was none of us on the spot to know if the accident was caused due to rash driving,” he said.
Police said that Monica had sustained scratches on the shoulder but had suffered a severe head injury.
She was first taken to a private hospital in Anna Nagar where doctors told the family that she must be taken to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The family then took her to another private hospital where the doctors declared her ‘dead on arrival’.
The autopsy was performed on Friday and the body handed over to the family.
