129 beggars rounded up across the city

The city police have rounded up 129 beggars, including 34 children, over the last two days. 71 cases were booked against them.

The police conducted a series of raids on roads following an order of the Madras High Court passed while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by the NGO Exnora highlighting the abduction of two children from the pavement of Walltax Road and Esplanade last year.

The police cracked down on the those begging on the roads and junctions on Walltax Road, Triplicane, Anna Salai, Egmore and Central Railway Station. A senior police officials said, “Over 56 persons were sent to a rehabilitation centre and 25 children were sent to special home for children. Others were let off after collecting details about them.”
