A youth is feared to have drowned at a lake in Mangammanpalya in southeast Bengaluru on Sunday.

The victim, Salam, 19, was a mason and a resident of Mangammanpalya who had come to swim, along with his two friends, at the lake around noon.

The police said that Salam did not know how to swim and drowned. His friends got scared and ran away from the spot, alerting a few locals passing by. The locals rushed to the spot and tried to find Salam, and later informed the police, who in turn alerted the Fire and Emergency Services.

The Fire Service also tried to search for the body but they called off the search in the evening, after it began to rain.

The search will resume on Monday, a senior police officer said. The Bandepalya police are overseeing the search operation and will register a case of unnatural death as soon as the body is recovered.
