A 23-year-old youth was arrested and booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) by the Chikkajala police on the charges of attempted sexual assault of an eight-year-old minor on Tuesday evening.

Police officials have identified the accused as Prashanth Kumar, a native of West Bengal, who had come to the city a month ago and was working as a house keeping staff in a resort situated in Geddenahalli.

The victim, daughter of a carpenter, was playing in front of her house on Tuesday evening in Tabarahalli when the alleged attempt to sexual assault took place.

The accused approached the girl and told her that he will take her to meet her father, who was working in a construction site nearby. When the girl agreed, Prashanth took the eight-year-old to a nearby eucalyptus groove and started undressing her. However, the accused noticed two persons walking around the groove and tried to flee the spot.

But the two locals, who noticed the girl lying undressed, realized something was wrong and alerted other people. The locals chased and managed to nab the accused.

Meanwhile, police officials were notified who rushed to the spot arrested the accused.

The parents of the victim were told about the incident, who then registered a complaint with Chikkajala police, said the police sources.

The accused was booked under POCSO Act and was remanded to judicial custody.
