Work stalled on disputed land

Bangalore University (BU) and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) officials on Monday stalled construction work being taken up on a disputed parcel of land adjoining the BU Jnana Bharathi campus, behind the National Law School of India University campus.

The BDA is in a civil litigation with a person claiming to be the owner. A BDA official said the land, which was initially part of the Jnana Bharathi campus, was returned to the Revenue Department in 1986. Later, it was allotted to the NGEF Employees House Building Co-operative Society which gave it to the BDA. However, a private individual claimed ownership of the land in 2007. The BDA took him to court and the case is still pending. BU Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda said the only anxiety he had was if the land was blocked it could cut off access to parts of the campus.
