A newly-wed woman hanged herself at her house at HSR Layout on Friday, leaving behind a note blaming her mother-in-law for dowry harassment.

The police identified the victim as Vanita, 27, and said her mother-in-law, Srimati, has been booked under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and arrested.

Vanita, daughter of Mysuru City Corporation councillor Nagabhushan, married Vasant Kumar, a software engineer with a major automobile firm at Whitefield, in June this year. Kumar’s family hailed from Denkanikottai, Tamil Nadu, and he lived with his mother at HSR Layout.

Srimati had been to Denkanikottai, while Kumar had gone to work on Friday, leaving Vanita alone at home. As Vanita did not respond to any calls by her mother and sister, they alerted Kumar, who asked one of his tenants on the first floor to check. When the tenant peeped through a window, he saw Vanita’s body hanging in the bedroom, and alerted the police.

A senior police official said Vanita had left behind a letter to her husband, in which she accused his mother of harassing and humiliating her for not bringing any dowry.
