A 59-year-old woman and her 38-year-old daughter-in-law were found murdered in Vasanthnagar on Monday.

The assailants reportedly gained entry into the house and hacked the duo to death before escaping with valuables.

The victims have been identified as Santoshi and her daughter-in-law Latha.

Latha’s husband Dinesh was at the family firm’s office in Balepete with his father Sampath . Her two daughters were at school.

The incident came to light when her 14-year-old daughter returned from school around 11.30 a.m.

A preliminary inquiry revealed that some visitors had arrived on Monday morning. Latha tried to reach her husband but couldn’t get through.

She then called up his uncle, who reportedly asked her to talk to the visitors to find out the purpose of their visit.

“There was no forced entry and the assailants stayed in the house before killing the two women,” a senior police officer said, adding that there were indications that the women were preparing tea for the assailants.

Though the house was ransacked and few valuables were reportedly missing, the police suspect that the murder was not for gain.

“The victims sustained multiple stab injuries which indicated that the murder was out of vengeance. We think the assailants were known to the family,” he added.

Mr. Sampath, who runs a chemical firm, has been living with his family in Bengaluru for over two decades, though they hail from Rajasthan.
