A 61-year-old woman and her daughter allegedly committed suicide by hanging in their house at Rajajinagar.
The incident took place three days ago and came to light on Monday when a shopkeeper, who was their neighbour, sensed foul smell emanating from the house and alerted the police.
The deceased have been identified as Savitramma and her daughter Devaki Manju, 37. Their source of income was the rent from four shops attached to their house.
Savitramma's son Raju, who works in a private factory, lives with his family in Kengeri.
According to the police, Savitramma and Devaki were seen last on Friday around 10 p.m. when their tenant spoke to them.
On Monday, around 11 a.m., the shop keeper sensed a foul smell. He alerted the police and Raju. Once Raju reached the house, police broke open the door and found them hanging. The bodies were rushed to Victoria hospital for post-mortem.
Raju told the police that he had separated from his mother and sister due to a property row a few year ago.
Savitramma's husband had two wives, and he had passed away 10 years ago. The second wife's son Srinivas lives in the same area but was not in touch with them.
Further investigation is on to ascertain the reason which led them to take this extreme step.
