The wife of a kidney patient has complained to the Rajajinagar police that a private hospital sold her father-in-law’s kidney meant to have been transplanted on her husband, as a result of which the latter died.
Sumathi Bhaskar alleged that the hospital took a huge fee to transplant her father-in-law’s kidney on her husband C. Bhaskar. But it was never done and the kidney was sold. Consequently, Bhaskar died a fortnight later, on Friday.
Tension at hospital
Tension prevailed at Suguna Hospital Friday morning when angry relatives and friends staged a protest in front of the hospital after Bhaskar’s death at the hospital, where he was readmitted.
Hospital medical director Jayachandra said Bhaskar was first admitted with kidney failure in August. His father’s kidney was transplanted successfully and it was functioning normally.
Readmitted
However, Dr. Jayachandra said, the patient was again brought to the hospital with fever and high levels of creatinine. He was treated there for a few days and was discharged when he was fine.
But problems persisted and he was again admitted on November 9. The biopsy report revealed kidney malfunction. With the family’s consent, after explaining all the risks, the kidney was removed and sent for further tests to Manipal Hospital. Early Friday, Bhaskar passed away. His father, who donated the kidney is doing well, Dr. Jayachandra stated.
Police have registered a case under Section 174C of IPC, death under mysterious circumstances. The body has been sent for post-mortem and the report is awaited.
