“No effort to put down Islam or Muslims will be allowed,” was the promise Governor H.R. Bhardwaj made to thousands who had gathered here to celebrate Eid-e-Milad on Friday, to mark the birthday of Prophet Mohammed. Taking part in the celebrations at the Young Men’s Christian Association grounds where all the processions culminated, the Governor added: “There are instances, like the banning of cow slaughter. But I will not bow to pressure and do something illegal.”

Prior to the event at the grounds, colourful processions of grand tableaus were carried out from different parts of the city under the leadership of Juloos-E-Mohammadi Committee and All Sunni Anjumans of Bangalore. The long processions moving towards Nrupathunga Road, resulted in traffic jams near Hudson Circle and other central parts of the city. Vijaya J., who was travelling from Jayanagar towards Kumarakrupa Road, said that it took her an hour and a half to complete the journey.
