Home Minister K.J. George and Police Commissioner Raghavendra H. Auradkar were among those who visited BGS Global Hospital on Wednesday to enquire about the health of Jyothi Uday who is recovering post-surgery.
The 44-year-old bank manager was attacked on Tuesday morning inside an ATM kiosk near Corporation Circle by a man demanding money.
Mr. George promised all help from the government to the family and necessary action with regard to security at ATMs. He said that there are over 2,500 ATMs in the city. Of them, 1,900 have security guards. “I have ordered that guards be posted at all ATMs immediately. Those which do not have guards will be forced to shut down,” he said, adding that it is the bank’s responsibility to provide security at its kiosks.
He has requested the home secretary to form a committee to ensure that guards are deployed at all ATM kiosks.
Mr. Auradkar said he has called for a meeting with bank officials and would take up the case with the Home Minister too.
Minister for Women and Child Development Umashree, who called on the victim as well, urged the police to nab the accused as quick as possible.
‘Send a message’
Rajeev Chandrashekhar, MP, released a statement condemning the attack. “This attack on a woman at 7 a.m. in the middle of our busy city, a stone’s throw away from the BBMP head office, should be a wake-up call to the Chief Minister and the Home Minister. A city like Bangalore needs more policing to ensure that citizens are safe. The city police must quickly hunt this man down. They should make an example of him to send a message to other thugs and hoodlums,” he said.
