It is that time of the year when people with psoriasis, eczema, and scalp dryness are advised caution. City-based dermatologists say they see a 10 per cent increase in the number of patients who complain about their condition worsening as winter sets in.
Dermatologist Sudheendra Udbalkar said, “Psoriasis and eczema tend to flare up during winter and patients need to ensure that they start moisturising their skin well before winter.”
Advice for allThose having diabetes and thyroid have an increased susceptibility towards dry skin. Praveen Rodrigues, a city-based dermatologist, points out that dry skin has a tendency to be predisposed to other skin infections during winter. Dr. Udbalkar said that dandruff increases during this period and this can lead to dryness of scalp. People who repeatedly use sanitizers and soaps to wash their hands should ensure that they do not do it compulsively.
PrecautionsFollowing simple tips such as moisturising the skin, applying oil before bath, and staying hydrated will help in ensuring that the skin is not damaged. Apart from external precautions, Dr. Rodrigues says that consuming food that is high in water content such as watermelon, green leafy vegetables and broccoli will keep the skin moist. “There is also a need to ensure that the difference in temperature indoors and outdoors is not too vast,” he cautions.
