Id-ul-Fitr being on Monday, was preceded by people in localities such as Shivaji Nagar shopping for the festival, buying clothes and accessories.
Shopping activity in places like Commercial Street drew people from in and around the city, with shops lined with an array of goods. People were busy shopping even till late into night on Sunday.
Muhammad Faizan Shareef, a trader at the Cane Street Tower at Meenakshi Koil Street, said that people’s choice of clothes was influenced by television serials this season. “The attraction of my shop is ‘Khushi ka top’ for which I had to place orders from Mumbai several times,” he said. Khushi is the leading actress of a well-known TV serial “ Is Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon .” Shoppers could be seen shouting out their specialities ranging from “Masakali top” to “Bodyguard pants”.
Summayya, who had come along with her daughter all the way from KGF to shop in Bangalore, said: “On the occasion of Id, I am satisfied only if I spend some time shopping at Commercial Street.”
Mehendi artists from Jaipur were also seen doing brisk business. The designs were available in patterns like Pakistani, Arabic, Rajasthani and Indian.
Saraswathi, a Mehendi artist from Rajasthan, started her career in the streets of Bangalore at the age of 10. It has been over 50 years now for the business here and she has 10 women employed by her.
“Three days prior to Id I get over 1,000 customers and I give them tokens as the crowd only gets bigger each day. My assistants help me from early morning to late night,” said Ms. Saraswathi. With shops lining the streets filled with goods and the aroma of various street foods thick in the air, walking through Commercial Street after breaking of fast in the evening was a treat during Ramzan.
