After more than two months’ holidays, thousands of private school students, hauled out of cosy beds, battled dank weather and morning traffic to return to school here on Monday. While some turned up with sleepy eyes, others were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on the first day of school.
Roshini K. Yadav, a Class 6 student of St. Claret School in Jalahalli, armed with new books and stationery, said that she was happy to be back. “The first day of school is always exciting as we have new teachers. It is also great fun as they don’t teach lessons on day one,” said the chirpy 11-year-old.
Students from government schools, though, had an earlier start as they had to return on May 30.
However, Y. Vimala Bai, headmistress of Government Higher Primary School, Srikantapura, said that the attendance was poor as many were still not yet back from their holidays.
“Even though it has been four days since schools started, 20 per cent of the students are yet to return to school,” she said.
D.A. Sreedevi, headmistress, Basaveshwaranagar Government High School, said that admissions to Class 8 were still on.
“Attendance was very low last week but it picked up on Monday. However, admissions are still on and we are still waiting for students to enrol,” she said.
Big rush
Meanwhile, bookstores were flooded with parents and anxious students who were waiting to buy their textbooks and stationery.
Bharath, manager of Saraswati Book Centre in Rajajinagar, said: “We have been seeing a rush in the bookstores and have run out of stock for the Class 9 CBSE textbooks.”
