The former Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad, H.B. Walikar, who was admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) after being arrested by the Lokayukta police on October 20, has been referred to the Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bangalore .

KIMS medical superintendent Mallikarjun Swami said Mr. Walikar had developed heart-related complications and there were variations in his heartbeat on Monday. Hence, he has been referred to the hospital in Bangalore. He was discharged from KIMS and handed over to the Lokayukta police, Mr. Swami added.

Lokayukta Superintendent of Police K. Parashuram said as per the recommendations of the doctors at KIMS, Mr. Walikar was being sent to Bangalore under police escort. Along with Lokayukta police personnel, additional staff from the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate would accompany Mr. Walikar to Bangalore, he said. The Lokayukta police visited the university and completed the process of document verification and sought clarification in connection with the probe into the alleged irregularities at the university on Monday, he added.

Adjourned

Meanwhile, the Dharwad Bench of the Karnataka High Court adjourned hearing to November 3, on the writ petition filed by Mr. Walikar pleading quashing of the FIR filed against him by the Lokayukta. Justice H. Billappa of the High Court conducted preliminary hearing of the writ petition here on Monday.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the judge adjourned hearing to November 3.
