Residents of Beerasandra blocked the highway connecting Hosur to Dabaspet for over an hour on Saturday morning after a 14-year-old school girl was killed in an accident near Beerasandra Gate, on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The deceased Harshitha, a Class 9 student, was on her way to school when she was run over by an SUV. She sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.

As word of the accident spread, villagers gathered on the highway, burnt tires, blocked traffic movement and demanded that the authorities install speed breakers. They prevented police officers from removing the body and alleged that no action had been taken despite submitting several representations to the authorities to install speed breakers.

Vehicle movement at Devanahalli and Doddaballapur came to a halt until the jurisdictional Vishwanathpura police pacified the protesters and cleared the roads.

The police have seized the vehicle and are looking for the driver who is on the run.
