The West Division police have arrested two habitual offenders who had poisoned five stray dogs. The police said that they resorted to killing the dogs so that they could carry on with anti-social activities at night without the dogs raising an alarm by barking.
On January 5, five dogs and five crows were found dead in Ranganath Colony in J.J. Nagar. The residents found that the animals died after feeding on food laced with rat poison. Suspecting it to be the handiwork of youth of a particular community, they filed a complaint with the police.
The J.J. Nagar police found two habitual offenders, Moses (22) and Prabhakar (24), moving around the area suspiciously. When interrogated, the duo confessed to the crime. They have now been remanded in judicial custody, said Labhuram, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).
According to the police, the duo would steal batteries from parked motorcycles and autorickshaws at Ranganath Colony and sell them to buy alcohol.
In December, the duo was attacked by a pack of stray dogs and Prabhakar was even bitten by one when they went to the colony. They returned to the colony again at night on January 4, only to be attacked again by the dogs.
Enraged, the duo, who found a huge quantity of biryani dumped in a garbage bin, laced it with rat poison.
