Three elderly sisters were assaulted here on Monday afternoon, leading to the death of one and injuries to the others. They were attacked allegedly by a plumber who had undertaken a repair job at their house.
The incident happened in Jayanagar 7th Block.
Chandra Narasimhan, the 78-year-old who died, and her sisters, Sharada, 79, and Munilakshamma, 88, have been living in the house for 50 years. Chandra Narasimhan’s daughter, Chitra, a paediatrician at Jayadeva hospital, was away at work when the attack took place.
The police, quoting the two survivors, said that Ms. Munilakshamma had taken the plumber, Ramachandra, to the terrace where he attempted to strangle her. She fell unconscious. He then cornered Ms. Sharada, tried to strangle her too, and locked her in a room and went downstairs.
When Ms. Munilakshamma regained consciousness, she let her sister out of the room. They went downstairs and found Chandra Narasimhan lying on the floor. Ms. Munilakshamma phoned her daughter and told her about the attack. Chandra Narasimhan was declared brought dead at the Kempe Gowda Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital. Chandra Narasimhan’s other daughter, Rekha, who lives nearby, said, “I spoke to my mother around 10 a.m. and everything seemed fine. Around 1.15 p.m., my sister Chitra got a call from my aunt (Ms. Munilakshamma) asking her to come immediately.” Ms. Chitra, who reached the house about half an hour later, alerted the police. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H.S. Revanna, who visited the spot, said that Chandra Narasimhan seemed to have been choked to death. There were no visible injury marks on the body. He also said that it was unlikely that any weapon had been used. “The jewellery worn by the women is missing and the house was ransacked. But other valuables seem to be in place; also a locker seemed to be untouched,” he said. The two injured sisters were rushed to Jayadeva hospital. Chandra Narasimhan, whose husband died two years ago, also has a son, Vivek, an engineer who works in the U.S.
Ms. Munilakshamma and Ms. Sharada are unmarried.
The Jayanagar police have registered a case. Special teams have been formed.
